PHEASANT ( PHASIANUS COLCHICUS. )

In Romania, the pheasant areal is the low plain or hilly areas, and it may be found in larger numbers, up to altitudes of 300 meters.

Worthwhile noting is that in the hunting fields where we organize pheasant hunting, there is an exclusive wild pheasant population and there is no practice of introducing nursery pheasant population before a hunting party.

The weight of an adult cock is of about 1,5 kg . Acccording to law and hunting ethics, the hen (female) is not hunted .

Hunting is done with beaters (drive hunting) or by foot , possibly with pointer dogs .

The drive hunting is practiced especially in woodland of high bush areas. The hunters line is established at one edge of the forrest, the hunters place themselves at 100 m of one another, and from the opposite direction the drive hunt starts.

Short hunt beats of maximum 500 meters are organized, thus up to 6-7 beats are possible in one hunting day. A good beat day's crop of beat may yield 2-4 pheasants for each hunter. We recommend groups of at least 6 hunters.

The hunt by tracking , possibly with pointing dogs is a hunting for smaller groups; it is a fascinating, sports hunting, which may offer unforgettable moments. About 5-10 km may be covered on one day, and a good hunting day may yield 2-5 pheasants for a hunter.

Recommended gun: shot gun, pellet diameter 3 - 3.5 mm (no.5; 3) .
