CAPERCAILLIE ( Tetrao Urogallus. )

The Romanian cock has its areal in the alpine forests, at the edge of woodland vegetation, at altitudes of 1200 - 1500 meters. Romania has a substantial cock population of about 7800 specimens .

An adult weighs about 4-5 kg . Hunting is practiced from a nearby place during mating season. Only male cocks can be hunted , chasing of hens being forbidden.

Optimum hunting period is between April 20 to May 10 , when there is still snow in the mountains.

It is a passionate hunting, requiring a very good physical condition to enable the hunter to climb (walking) 4-6 hours until the overnight place.

As a rule, the trip to the hunting place starts in the afternoon, the hunters spend the night in a hunting hut or sheepfold near the hunting place. Hunters start their trip to the hunting place early in the morning so that they may reach the posts before daybreak.

It is recommendable that the cock hunters meet in groups of 2-3 persons .

Recommended caliber for the cock hunting gun: very light calibers or shot guns .
